Anyone want to do something for my birthday?

It seems that atomic_umber and I will be in NM in October, the 13th through 17th. We're planning to do a birthday dinner or something for me on the 15th (Friday) in Albuquerque. If you're interested, let me know! I have no idea where or what yet, though it'll be partially dependent on how many people there are. Buca di Beppo is a possibility, I guess.

Here's how she put it:

Do you live in New Mexico or can get there? Are you Bill's friend, lover or stalker?

Bill and I will be in New Mexico for a myriad of birthday festivities from 13 October to 17 October. My mother's 50th is on 5 Oct and Bill's 28th is on 22 Oct, so we're going to have two days of birthday fun in between the two.

Friday is Bill's day. We want to do a dinner, but we don't know how many folks will want to show up (and we don't know if we'll be conflicting with Casa Imbri's things). So, if you can see this and would enjoy having dinner with us and wishing Mr. Bill a happy birthday, please comment here and let us know. We're trying to get a ballpark number of folks so we can make an appropriate reservation.

We'll also take suggestions of places to eat (and/or places with big rooms), but since it's his birthday he gets final say.

Also, I plan on being in the northern part of the state the day before that, I think. If that changes your plans let me know in case I move things around.

Wherein I leave for Las Vegas during the hottest week of the year

As always, it's about the time that I say "hey, Livejournal folks! I'm on my way to the sweltering heat of Las Vegas! Would anyone like a shirt or whatnot from Defcon?"

Well... that.

I won't be at BlackHat this year (unless one of my ninja-like friends wants to sneak me in?), but I'll be at DefCon, and I'll be in town starting tonight. I plan on doing LV BSides tomorrow and Thursday, but maybe I'll alternate between that and just bumming around begging for 0-day around Caesar's.

Server work going on

In case you care about my server, but don't read your email there: I'm doing some big changes this weekend. Expect some reachability issues while things are sorting out. Feel free to contact me if needed.

Mail isn't being lost, even though there will be a period where it isn't delivered.

I'll have to buy a cubicle wall to put this up on

I'm not normally the type to have comics up in my officeopen-floor-plan-desk-space. I like a good Dilbert as much as the next guy, but, I don't know. It feels a little too "someone has a case of the Mooondays!" or something.

Anyway, I might break this rule for this:
Devotion to Duty

They already think I'm a gun-toting psycho*, so this would fit right in.

* Even though I don't own a gun, and I'm in a state that doesn't really let me own one. You tell one story about a friend buying a semi-automatic shotgun on a whim, and suddenly you're the dangerous one.

Thanks, Clear

So, a coworker signed up for this newfangled Clear WiMax service that I've been talking about, and loaned me his spare USB dongle so I could give it a test. Initial impression?

... bad. Not quite the 6Mbps down, 768kbps up they're advertising.

Well, I got it

Evidently I passed my CCNA test today. Not too sure how that happened. I guess well?

Unofficial score of ~920/1000 (passing score is 840).

To celebrate, a Cisco router at work made my head explode today. How? Like this.

Well, with more routing and less, you know... scanning.

CCNA book amusements, part 1

This is going to be long, I expect. The book in question is CCNA Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide, by Todd Lammle, 6th edition, Sybex.

And this is what's going to get me through the test?

There will be more of these posts, I'm sure.

SWA in-flight wifi

So, I'm flying from NM to IL as I type this, using the Southwest onboard wifi. It cost $10.

First of all, a couple of links: the flyer, and a speed test. Latency is a bitch.

It's usable. That ~1s ping time makes SSH kind of painful. They also put a ~1" (on my 13" MacBook screen) banner across the top of every webpage you go to, which worries me. *checks* Ok, it's just HTTP. I was worried they would be proxying SSL.

Would this be usable for VPN? Doubtful. But for checking my email and dicking around on IRC? Ok.

Also, the 6:45 AM flight? Not a great idea, but it kept me from dealing with huge crowds in the airport. I'll get home at a relatively reasonable time too.

[Edit] I could do without censoring content though. I can't load images (and just images) from Sexy Losers. Yes, it's adult material. There isn't even a "blocked site" warning, they just don't come up. It gives me "http(:)//192.168.21.20:15871/cgi-bin/blockpage.cgi?ws-session=1778391325" (link broken so LJ doesn't eat it). It would be nice if they set some headers so that it wouldn't be locally cached.
